In short,
Toledo is different.
Visitors
definitely don't trip over lots of other people in Toledo - tourists or
locals.
Toledo is a
vast land, some of it deep and dark, full of caves, rivers, Mayan
healers, remote small Mayan villages, organic cacao plantations, Monkey
River, orchids, birds, jaguars, howler monkeys, and even excellent
snorkeling, diving and fly fishing at the Snake Cayes and the Sapodilla
Caye Range.
(What Toledo
doesn't have is a beach -- even though it borders on the Caribbean.
But, that's probably a good thing, because if it did, it would not have
remained the extraordinarily special place it is today.)
The best
lodging in Toledo for a Belize jungle vacation is in small, boutique
hotels such as Hickatee Cottages, Coral House, Blue Belize and The Lodge
at Big Falls, although a homestay in a Mayan village such as Na Laam Ca
is another option for travelers who want an immersive Mayan cultural
experience.
