Mayan Cultural Journey

The Mayan Cultural Journey is a full day at the Maya Centre Village hosted by Village residents. 

Cultural Journey visitors meet and interact with their Mayan hosts in a variety of settings and participate in traditional activities such as gathering medicinal jungle plants or jungle plants used in the Maya cuisine, learning a Mayan craft and cooking a traditional Mayan dish.

Village hosts are Mayan men and woman who want to share their ancient and modern culture with visitors.  Each Cultural Journey includes a licensed Mayan guide skilled in jungle craft, plants and animals, and particularly the Cockscomb Basin environment.


Basic Itinerary
(times are approximate and may be adjusted according to group interests)

7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m: Breakfast with Mayan hosts at the Maya Centre Village

 

8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m: Walking Tour of Maya Centre Village, including:

  • History:  general Mayan history, history of Village, history of Mopan Maya, differences between Mayan cultural groups such as the Mopan Maya and the Ketchi Maya
  • Jungle Wildlife and Plants:   indigenous jungle plants used by the Mopan Maya in their daily lives, native jungle birds and animals in the Village
  • Cabbage Haul Creek:   traditional uses of creek, local environmental issues, creek as animal, plant and fish habitat
  • Mayan Home Life:   traditional construction methods (roof thatching, palmetto wall construction, etc.), child care, family composition, marriage, property ownership, division of labor
  • School:   organization of Belize school system, opportunities for higher education, local resources, educational focus

 

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m: Jungle Survival:  medicinal trail tour and gathering of medicinal jungle herbs or food from jungle (type of plants gathered dependent on seasonal and weather conditions)

 

11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m: Meal Preparation Workshop:  hands-on workshop in the preparation of traditional Mayan meal in a traditional Mayan kitchen

 

12:30 p.m. -  1:00 p.m: Break

 

  1:00 p.m. -  2:00 p.m: Lunch with Mayan hosts and children's cultural presentation

 

  2:00 p.m. -  5:00 p.m: Craft/medicine/language workshop: hands-on workshop focusing on a traditional Mayan craft or preparation of medicinal jungle plant gathered earlier in day, plus basic Mopan Maya language instruction


Cost:  $107 USD per person, plus 8% Belize sales tax (Contact us for direct booking Internet discounts.)

Transportation:   Ground transport by private vehicle can be arranged from Dangriga or Placencia.  (However, for a truly authentic experience, we highly recommend local bus service.  A local escort can also be provided for bus trips.)

The Mayan Cultural Journey is also a part of the Maya
Immersion which includes one or more Mayan Jungle Journeys.
