Most people are aware of the
ancient Maya people and their culture, their advanced skills in mathematics and astronomy,
and the sudden, as yet unexplained, demise of the advanced Mayan city-states in Central
America.
But, many of us don't realize that the
Mayan people remain very much a part of modern Belize, and that traditional Mayan culture,
medicine and unique relationship with nature and the land, the Mother, remain
very much alive here today.
Working with the Mopan Maya community at Maya
Centre Village at the entrance to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Reserve, we have put
together a group of activities designed to allow visitors to discover the Mayan world of
southern Belize.
