As
with Ambergris Caye, the
Belize Barrier Reef is much closer to Caye Caulker than further south
in the Hopkins/ Placencia areas, so diving and snorkeling are a little
less expensive than in more southern areas. Also, most divers
and snorkelers visit the Blue Hole from
Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker (also Turneffe and Lighthouse
Atolls).
Ruins and jungle trips
are also available from Caye Caulker during your Belize beach vacation, but require a boat or
plane ride into the mainland first. No beaches that slope to the
sea. (The entire
island is pretty much a beach, but a seawall separates it from the
Caribbean.)
Lodging
options are much more limited on Caye Caulker than Ambergris Caye, and
Caye Caulker is more "laid back" than Ambergris, with a Rastafarian
undernote to the mostly Mestizo culture.
(Recommended Caye
Caulker Resorts and Hotels)
Caye Caulker reminds me a little of Key West
about 20 years ago.
